What do you get when you combine a rebellious split personality with an eclectic artiste and a futuristic student of music?
Hint:
It is equivalent to what you search for when the world seems mundane and stagnant due to a lack of originality. Its what you get when… it’s out with the old and in with the new.
“The Freshmen”,not to be confused with the anxiety and nervousness of your high school underclassmen, these “freshmen” have a combined 30 years of industry knowledge. Despite their individual accomplishments; they approach every project as if it was their first. “The Freshmen” perpetuate their lifestyle and philosophies in an honest attempt to make the world FRESH… one song at a time. So again I ask, what do you get when you combine a rebellious split personality with an eclectic artiste and a futuristic student of music? The Freshmen.
Put the Gorillaz, Outkast and the Beastie Boys together in a cheap motel room with a microphone, and you may come close to the sound of The Freshmen. I know what you might be thinking but I encourage you to first take a dive into the mind of The Freshmen before you categorize them as just another Alternative Hip Hop act. The Freshmen are a symbol. The Freshmen represent the proverbial underdog. The new guy. Even though they have been paying dues for years, in the grand scheme of things they are still Freshmen. Instead of rejecting this position, they’ve embraced it and are confident they will be embraced because of it. Equipped with a heap of talent, a passion for making great music and the balls to do it, it’s only a matter of time before the world opens it’s ears to the sound of The Freshmen.

DJ Illefect:
Alzy Esperanza, better known to the DJ’ing world as, ILLEFECT, a San Francisco native, earned his stripes at a very young age and still mastering his craft at this very moment. Aggressively polishing his skills, he practices at home when he is not out spinning at a local night club or event. I wouldn’t categorize him as just “another” DJ, because it took him many years to learn and grow and grasp the fundamental steps of what it takes to be a true disc jockey.
ILLEFECT began Djing in 1999, influenced by his friend, DJ Marcus Lee, he assisted Marcus with small mobile gigs around the Bay Area and eventually, they both linked up with other Dj’s creating a crew called, Turntable Holix Entertainment. Alzy was always surrounded by music and musicians since he was a child. His grandfather played the saxophone, his father was an aspiring singer, and his older sister, Inkfat, was extremely into the underground hip hop scene and would participate in numerous hip hop events across the bay area, and when Alzy was old enough, she was able to take him to his first DJ Battle at the infamous Zebra Records in San Francisco’s lower Haight. Afterwards, he was then inspired by the art of turntablism. Back then, you could catch him watching scratch videos in his room, he also attended hip hop functions, dug for vinyl, and looked up to crews such as Supernatural Turntable Artists, The Fingerbangerz, Action Figures, 5th Platoon, Invisible Skratch Piklz, Beat Junkies, The Allies, X-Ecutioners and so forth. They became the platform for his motivation to learn how to scratch and beat juggle.
In 2008, he then became an essential member of the local Emcee collective, Kreative Resource, as their DJ, with existing members, K-6, Speakfree, Ster Crazy, and The IMF. You can catch Kreative Resources performing all over the West Coast, leaving their mark and indention within the hip hop community. As for ILLEFECT, being only in his mid 20’s, there’s still a lot of room for him to grow. He appreciates the culture and all that it inhabits by staying true and modest as possible and respecting the veterans that helped pave the way for him and kids within his age group. He is most definitely a hidden gem ready to be discovered nationwide…so don’t sleep.

Kreative Resource:
Kreative Resource is a HipHop crew consisting of SpeakFree the Main Mechanic (MC), Kay6 (he cooks up the beats), Ster CraZY aka Spittin’ Daily (MC), The I.M.F aka Sir Galaxy (MC) and DJ iLLEFECT (holdin down the tables). 2006 was the birth of Kreative Resource w/ original members Speak and Kay6 releasing the album “First Things First”. In 2007 the duo asked fellow rhyme spitter Ster CraZY to join the crew to add that raw street linguistic element. With the 3 amigos intact, they crafted the critically acclaimed “The Difference is US.” LP which featured The I.M.F on the classic track “Brotherz in Armz”. KR logically took the next step and linked up with DJ iLLEFECT to hit the road for various Bay Area shows. KR has garnered the attention of many HipHop heads for their energetic live set. Now with the crew fully formed, Kreative Resource is set to grab a piece of this HipHop pie. With 2 turntables, 3 mics and a beat machine Their motto is simple, “Make Good Music to Stimulate Creativity!”

Flash Thompson:
Who is Flash Thompson? Is it a group, a sound, a project, or just a desire to break the mold in the current climate of music? Flash Thompson is the brain child of Go Kid Go founder Paco Camino. The distinctive, energy-packed sound is a mix of musical influences ranging from electro punk, pop, soul and ‘80s music. Working with producers Noah Ayala and Stephen “7” Helmer, Paco has recently completed the first single, “Hangover Hollywood,” which will be featured on HBO’s Entourage this season. In the first year of its inception, Flash Thompson has created an impressive catalog of music and the first EP entitled, “I Listen To Flash Thompson & So Should You” is set to release this December.

Kaveman:
From Detroit MIchigan. Kaveman is many things—humorous, smooth, aggressive and insightful.
The Kaveman moniker is meant to represent a journey of self-discovery. This M.C. has come from the pitch black of the cave into the light of day. He is familiar with darkness and fear as well as triumph and righteousness. Using his talent the Kaveman serves as a harbinger between these two worlds, with a full-length album in the works and mix tapes dropping all the time. His voice is strong and his message is clear. “I just hope the people are ready to listen,” he says. “Because the New Stone Age is coming. Can’t nothin’ stop me!”
