Join four amazing musical acts in a night of conscious and full-throttle funk, hip-hop, and electro-soul by the cream of the Oakland crop, plus a visitation from the Funkanauts, who have not yet declared a home planet.
Known to followers as the Brothas from Planet Funk and the Guardians of the Good Groove, the Funkanauts bring deep rhythms from the farthest reaches of space. At least that’s what their music sounds like. They truly believe that music can change the world, especially if it’s rooted in the foundations of groups such as Ohio Players and Funkadelic. A typical concert features such pointedly powerful songs as “Feel the Funk” and “We Got Funk.” Lead guitarist and vocalist Jason Collins – the 2007 winner of the Guitarmageddon sponsored by Guitar Center – organized the group in 1997, along the way adding current members Terrence “T-Bone” Hunter on percussion, bass guitarist Charles Quinn, drummer Dante Smith, keyboardist Ron Mathews, and backing singer Regi Hawkins. http://www.myspace.com/funkanauts
The members of hip-hop group BRWN BFLO (pronounced Brown Buffalo) are musical storytellers of the diverse Chicano experience and the struggles of indigenous people worldwide. Giant, Jacinto, Somos One, and Big Dan are the perfect mix of the old school and new school, blazing a new trail through contemporary hip-hop music. The group keeps its focus through deep community roots and a strong dedication to personal testimony as block educators turned musicians. http://www.myspace.com/brwnbflo
Rap/hip-hop/soul group Waheed and the Resistance is a leader in the conscious movement of Bay Area rap. Veterans of two decades, “they were on the conscious vibe before it was popular, ahead of its time,” says hip-hop scholar and activist Davey D (Hard Knock Radio). Their 2009 CD, “It’s Time,” bursts with 19 songs of “intelligent, relevant, socially aware lyrics layered over perfectly arranged music,” raved the East Bay Express. W.A.R. is involved in and regularly performs benefit concerts for community empowerment organizations. http://www.myspace.com/waheedresistance
The exciting young singer Isis Genesis presents “electro-soul,” a juicy blend of soul that makes audiences want to dance.
