Horizons Unlimited of San Francisco, Inc. (Horizons), established 1965, is a community based organization that provides substance abuse prevention and treatment, employment, entrepreneurial, and gender-specific services for at-risk Latino and other youth, ages 12-26. The DJ Project is an arts education, employment, and entrepreneurial program at Horizons that uses music to engage youth through high appeal programming in small business management, event production, audio production, DJing, b-boying/b-girling, and community service.
The DJ Project is funded by the Department of Public Health, Community Behavioral Health Services and Department of Children, Youth, and their Families
The DJ Project is an arts entrepreneurship program built on a hip-hop foundation. It uses music to engage young adults, giving them opportunities to develop in a context familiar to them.
Through small business management, audio and video production, job readiness training and community service, The DJ Project model is a creative learning experience for the hip-hop generation.
The DJ Project consists of two distinct components:
1. After-school Employment & Entrepreneurship
Participants in this program module are paid employees of The DJ Project. As employees, these youth workers are responsible for the execution of The DJ Project’s business and marketing activities. They plan and execute a series of community events, basketball tournaments and performances, gaining skills in program administration, project management and budgeting. Lastly, these youth handle the media relations responsibilities of the program, writing press releases, organizing street teams and conducting outreach and student recruitment for our after-school arts programming.
2. After-school Arts Programming
The DJ Project’s after-school arts programs consist of dance, music production, lyric writing and dj classes. These free classes, built around a youth development framework, all integrate lessons in professionalism, project management and collaboration. They typically culminate with CD compilations that the youth sell for profit as well as graduation ceremonies and public performances.
DJ Project participants have the opportunity to assume leadership roles within the program, assuring continuity and opportunities for professional development. Current instructors are youth graduates of The DJ Project.
