ticketsSan Francisco’s jazzy Shotgun Wedding Quintet offers an excellent fusion of hip-hop, funk and R&B.  Formed in 2003, the quintet has worked to create an illicit blend of rap and jazz that’s rooted in tradition. Each member of the band is a multi-instrumentalist that uses a looping-technique to create a wall of sound as band members shift from instrument to instrument, building continuous layers of music and rhythm. As a result, this 5-piece ensemble creates the sound of a 10-piece group that is equal parts big-band and boom-bap, paying homage to the art of improvisation both lyrically and instrumentally.

Traditional, complex jazz arrangements form the skeleton on which each song is built, and are adorned by some of the Bay-Areas most sought-after instrumentalists. Adam Theis and Joe Cohen, both of whom have recorded with Zion I, share a variety of duties, juggling woodwinds, reeds, an electric bass and a few synthesizers. Pat Korte, a fierce drummer who frequently tours with Bay-Area legend Lyrics Born, leads the rhythm section, smacking his kit with dramatic authority. The group is rounded out by acclaimed left-field lyricist Dublin, whose unrivaled cadences are the result of countless after-hours ciphers and a finely-tuned sense of ironic humor, rife with pertinent pop-cultural commentary

The Shotgun Wedding Quintet has performed at prestigious festivals across the globe, including the Montreal and Monterey Jazz Festivals and sold-out shows in their hometown of SF at The Great American Music Hall and The Independent. Their 2008 self-titled record was the culmination of 4 years worth of inspiration, feuding, friendship, and a collective passion for music and performance. They recently wrapped up a nationwide tour opening for Zion I, and released their sophomore album, Tales From The Barbary Coast, in June 2011.
