Freddie Gibbs at Memorial Glade at UC Berkeley

Freddie Gibbs

When: March 31, 5 p.m.
Where: Memorial Glade – Berkeley, CA

Known for his modern take on Gangster rap, Freddie Gibbs is a mainstay in talks of the next hip-hop great. Gibbs’ versatility as a rapper and his natural charisma create a wholly individual sound that fends off classification and broaches the boundaries of the genre.

Gibbs’ prowess as a storyteller is not to be underestimated either; his work has drawn comparisons to the likes of 2Pac, Biggie and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony with brutally honest lyrics of his hometown of Gary, Indiana, and his violent life as a drug dealer. His latest album, Shadow of a Doubt, features dark, muted production that meshes well with Gibbs’ polished delivery. With his unique flow and bumping trap beats, Gibbs is an act that you don’t want to miss — be sure to catch his early-evening performance on Memorial Glade, which will take place at 5 p.m.

Homeboy Sandman @ Amoeba Berkeley

Amoeba Berkeley – February 4th @ 4:00pm

Hip-hop MC, musician, and writer Homeboy Sandman visits Amoeba Berkeley for a live appearance and signing before his show at the Elbo Room in SF later that night.

Raised in Queens, New York, Homeboy Sandman had academic stints in New Hampshire, Philadelphia, London, and Long Island, and came out just one semester short on two different graduate degrees. He’s also done some bartending too at the legendary Lennox Lounge in Harlem where Shaft used to drink.

In December of 2006, he decided to follow his passion; now he’s seven releases deep and counting. Before signing to Stones Throw, he’d already been chosen as a coach on MTV’s MADE, prominently featured in preeminent print hip-hop magazines XXL and The Source, and perpetually championed on online hubs like Okayplayer and 2DopeBoyz. Since inking with Stones Throw, his accolades have extended beyond the realm of the hip-hop specific. Rolling Stone has noted his “skill for wordplay that keeps you hooked.” NPR has highlighted his “artful, hysterical, disobedient hip-hop that you can dance to.” Pitchfork has straightforwardly dubbed him “one of the best pure lyricists around.”

He writes regularly for The Huffington Post and has also written for Gawker. While most of his writing is music, it appears he’ll write wherever a lot of people are looking. If he had an opportunity to give a speech at a huge rally, he’d take that too. More than anything else, he just wants to spread the word.
