SATURDAY, JUNE 7th AT F8 IN SAN FRANCISCO

With the recent successes of DJ pioneers such as A-Trak and DJ Craze, the art of turntablism and those who have paved the way in this lane of hip hop have once again found themselves in the spotlight. Propr, the new in-house promotion company for F8 in San Francisco, is paying homage to a true legend by welcoming J.Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies on Saturday June 7th.

J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-’80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J.Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5 6: A Tribute to J Dilla.

This evening will be a night of good quality music with a line up of supporting DJ’s compiled of some of the Bay Area’s best in Hip Hop, Bass and Beats. Don’t miss out and be sure to get your early bird tickets for as little as $7.50 via Eventbrite.

HOUSEPITALITY Featuring ANDRÉS (Slum Village)

( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) is proud to welcome a new voice to our weekly, with the producer of RA’s track of the year, and an opening set from one of our favorite back room maestros:

::ANDRÉS (Slum Village, Mahogani, La Vida | Detroit)::
::JOEL CONWAY (Black Pancake | San Francisco)::

Groove Lounge:

::TYREL WILLIAMS (Acid Test, Housepitality | SF/CHI)::

“I learned how to scratch before I learnt how to mix, and being a percussionist I take great pride in my scratching, I tell people I’m a hip-hop DJ but I don’t just play hip-hop.” – Andrés

In the Resident Advisor “Track of the Year” editor’s poll, there could be only one #1 track, and in 2012, the honor went to Detroit’s Andrés (aka DJ Dez Andres) for his track “New For U,” which we can guarantee you’ve heard at some point during the last year.

Though he’s been making “classically-informed house, soul, hip-hop and funk” since 1997, he hasn’t gained nearly as much name-recognition as his key supporter Moodymann, who is his closest contemporary. Born to a famed Detroit jazz musician father (Humberto ‘Nengue’ Hernandez), he got his first drum set at 3 years of age, and was steeped in the rich Motor City musical scene. He worked in the same record store in Detroit that Kenny Dixon Jr. (aka Moodymann) worked in, and became a committed master of crate-digging at a very early age.

Andrés has been called a “Don of house and hip hop.” He was recruited by J Dilla to DJ for Dilla’s hip hop crew Slum Village, and is only now reaping the respect accorded to an artist with this kind of pedigree, in the worlds of both underground house music and hip hop. It is this mixing of genres, bringing the hip hop sensibilities of J Dilla, to the realm of house music (a la Moodymann) that makes this a show not to be missed.

Opening up for Andrés is our friend and once-monthly Groove Lounge guest, Joel Conway, aka Leo Jay. Joel is usually recruited by us to play the back room, because we know that his deep, deep record collection, astounding knowledge of music (of all genres), his trained ear, and his amazing attitude, are a win-win-win-win for us. We’ve never been disappointed by his music, in the front room or the back, and we thought he would be the perfect fit to open for Andrés with a 3 hour set. Make sure to come early for free champagne, and to hear what he will do to shape the crowd, warm the dance floor, and prepare for a night of music like no other at Housepitality.

Finally, our resident Tyrel Williams will be playing a back room Groove Lounge set for us, rounding out an evening of deep crate diggers. Tyrel’s record collection is as deep and enviable as those of Andrés and Joel, and his knowledge of music runs just as deep, making him a perfect fit to round out this night.

The details:
FREE before 11pm with RSVP at www.housepitalitysf.com/rsvp
otherwise $5 before 11pm, $10 after
FREE champagne from 9pm-10pm
$5 Jameson (with mention of Housepitality discount)

Tyrel Williams

Tyrel has been a mainstay of Chicago’s underground House scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records where he spent the last decade building a mighty collection of 12” dance records. He spent 2009-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which is an ongoing all vinyl House / Techno weekly dedicated to the true art form of DJing. Guests have included Miles Maeda, Derrick Carter, Tevo Howard, Traxx, and Justin Long. Tyrel has recently moved to San Francisco where he is a resident DJ for Housepitality and has also started his Acid Test party with Bryan Bai-ee and Miguel Solari.
