About: LOS RAKAS

Los Rakas are a bilingual hip-hop group made up of Panamanian cousins Raka Rich and Raka Dun based in Oakland, California. Their style consists of a mixture of hip-hop influences with reggaeton, reggae, and dancehall. Los Rakas derive their name from the Panamanian slur “Rakataka,” a derogatory word for someone from the ghetto, or an impoverished neighborhood. In 2010, Los Rakas entered a new era of their career with their hand-picked slot alongside Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, and Manu Chao at Snoop Dogg’s Smoke Out Festival. From there, the group has gone on to release their debut EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada and prepared a track with prolific producer Diplo. Los Rakas have achieved widespread success without the need of a major label.

Beautiful Oakland Festival

Local Organization Hosts Beautiful Oakland Arts Festival and Black X-Games to promote Peace & Economic Development in East Oakland

Oakland, CA – Despite the overwhelming amount of murders every year in Oakland, Youth UpRising continues to fight for peace and economic development in East Oakland. Every year the youth organization employs over 300 youth in Alameda County as an effort to keep kids out of trouble and provide them with career opportunities.  This year, Youth UpRising’s Arts & Expression department is hosting “The Beautiful Oakland Festival”, an arts festival in collaboration with Ineffable Music Group, CEO and Hip-Hop Congress to present revolutionary Hip-Hop’s acts like Los Rakas and D’Labrie who are committed to improving the community they came from.  The organization will provide free food for the community for the first 100 guests. At the event, several organizations like CEO, WEAP, Olympian Thinking and the International Hip-Hop Parade will be tabling and presenting their services.  Everything is free and several Hip-Hop superstars will be in attendance to speak to the crowd, as will underground skaters who will be competing for the East Oakland Black X-Games.  The Youth UpRising live band Outta Pocket will also be featured in support of the live performances, along with their own in-house Street Theater and Dance teams.
