What started as a weekly party has grown into a multi-media event marketing company and social networking site covering urban events and music from the Bay Area and beyond. In addition, True Skool’s website has served as a resource for hip hop history and has grown into a social networking platform. About Black Thought

Tariq Trotter (born on October 3, 1971), better known as Black Thought, is an American hip-hop artist who is the lead MC of the Philadelphia-based hip hop group The Roots and occasional actor. Thought, who co-founded The Roots with drummer Questlove (Ahmir Thompson), is widely lauded for his complex and politically aware lyrical content, and his sharply honed live performances. In 2000, the Roots won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “You Got Me”, with guest performances by Erykah Badu and Eve.[4] The Roots’ albumThings Fall Apart was nominated for the Best Rap Album award.[5] For Jay-Z’s acoustic concert for the television program MTV Unplugged, The Roots provided instrumentals. About Zumbi (Zion I)

Having emerged out of the golden age of Hip Hop Culture, Zumbi has spent the last 12 years cementing his legacy as a classic MC. After gaining immense experience upon signing to major label Tommy Boy in the late 90′s, he took all of the hard earned lessons and applied them to the independent world of Rap. Zumbi has traversed the universe of beats and rhymes having recorded with varied artists ranging from Linkin Park to Too Short to Rebelution. The ability to transform according to different soundscapes has made him one of the most versatile MC’s in the game.

As the charismatic MC of Bay Area group Zion I, Zumbi has released 6 critically acclaimed albums. About DJ Vin Roc

Founder of ThatsThatlabel.com, a former 2x World champion DJ and arguably one of the most versatile Dj/Producers in the US, Vinroc aka Vincent Punsalan, started his career in music at the age of 10. He discovered his passion for music through Djing. Growing up across the river from Manhattan in Jersey City via Queens, he was influenced by the melting pot of music that New York city had to offer. Hip Hop, House, Reggae Dancehall and everything else in between, Dj Vinroc relocated to the west coast in 1997 to the Bay Area. Based on the west coast He began working with and performing with some of the most celebrated djs in the music industry: tour dates alongside Dj Z-trip, The Beat Junkies, Kid Kapri, Dj Qbert and Mix Master Mike just to name a few. He has even had the privelage to speak on a dj panel at a hip hop summit with the late Jam Master Jay and flanked by Africa Bambaataa. He has also been featured in numerous publications including urb magazine, the Source, XXL, the cover of Dj times, and rolling stones throughout his career. Vinroc represents two Dj super groups on each coast:5th Platoon from New York City and the Triple Threat Djs from the Bay Area, whose member include celebrated Mixtape Dj Neil Armstrong as well as Former ISP member DJ Shortkut . Currently Vinroc is focusing on music production and has had the privelage to do remixes for Talib Kweli , Black Thought of the Roots, Bay area soul siren Goapale, and Souls of Mischief. True to the Bay area’s independent musical spirit, Vinroc runs his own distribution and promotion of his own projects and has culminated into the launch of ThatsThatlabel.com.

About DJ Apollo

As a member of Triple Threat DJs, which includes Shortkut and Vin Roc, DJ Apollo is known for his “Many Styles”, whether it be his technique or musical selection. DJ Apollo began DJing in 1983. He was an Original Member and Co-founder of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz. He was also the DJ of Buckshot LeFonque f/jazz legend Branford Marsalis and toured worldwide with the group. He has appeared w/Buckshot LeFonque on Jay Leno, David Lettermen, Conan O’Brien, Soul Train. An interesting fact about Apollo is that he invented the art of band turntablism with Mix Master Mike in 1989 with their Peter Piper routine. Among the many titles and awards, Apollo has amassed are the 1992 DMC US Championship, 1992 DMC World Championship, and 1993 Bay Guardian Goldies award.

About Daddy Rolo

DADDY ROLO AKA ROLO 1-3 has been in the game for 20 years. He started djing in 1983. During the 90’s and over the next 10 years, The Pirate DJs, with Mind Motion and DJ Ivan) went on to become the top DJ crew on the West Coast. From 1995-2000, Rolo djed the Reggae Dancehall show on KMEL as well as had a show “Pirate Radio” (with Mind Motion & DJ Ivan) from 1997-2002. He took some time off to focus more on my own sound system “Lion King Sound/Entertainment”, producing a series of remix records “Sound Clash Ammo 1-4/Deadly Mix Records ” and promoting Reggae Events. In 2003, Rolo began promoting a bi-monthly event every 2nd & 4th Saturday “Reggae Gold” and a weekly Thursday night party “Give Thankz”. Reggae Gold has now become the most anticipated after-hour Reggae Dancehall event in Northern California. “

About Davey D

Davey D is a nationally recognized journalist, adjunct professor, Hip Hop historian, syndicated talk show host, radio programmer, producer, deejay, media and community activist. Originally from the Bronx, NY, Davey D’s been down with Hip Hop since since 1977 where he started out as an emcee for two crews TDK [Total Def Krew] out of Co-op City and the Avengers out of the Marble Hill Section of the Bronx. He moved to California and graduated from UC Berkeley. Davey D is the co-founder and host of several of the most cited Hip Hop radio and online news journalism projects of all time. Hard Knock Radio (HKR) is an award-winning daily syndicated prime time afternoon show focusing on Hip Hop culture and politics. One of the first of its kind, the show originated in 1999 on KPFA 94.1 FM in the San Francisco Bay Area, and now can be heard in Seattle, Atlanta, Portland, Fresno and is streamed live on KPFA.org, reaching close to a million listeners daily. In 2003, HKR was cited as best on air show by the East-Bay Express and Davey D voted Best On Air Personality. He was awarded The Profiles in Excellence Award by ABC 7 in the Bay Area (2005). He was recently awarded ‘Thank You Award’ in 2009 for Independent Artist Week. He is the founder and webmaster of Davey D’s Hip Hop Corner, which is widely considered to be one of the oldest and largest Hip Hop sites on the web, www.daveyd.com.

About D-Sharp

A skilled entertainer and triple threat, D Sharp can produce, DJ and rock his own mic. His passion for music coupled with diligence, has gained him attention from industry professionals, and to move with the best of the best. Whether touring the world with acclaimed artists, producing albums and orchestrating mixtapes, or DJing for hungry party-goers, his love for music shines through all his projects and has awarded him success on all fronts. D Sharp is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but his music has echoed across the world. As a DJ, he has toured with the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Outkast, Common, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, The Game, Pharrell, Wu Tang Clan, and Jurassic 5. About Mind Motion

DJ Mind Motion of the legendary Pirate DJs and 106.1 KMEL has been “Rockin’ The Party” for nearly 20 years strong in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. From his early start breakdancing with the Mind Motion Crew in the early 80s, to movin’ the crowd with his brother DJ EFX, DJ Mind Motion was destined to become a Hip-Hop & DJ pioneer. Mind Motion has been spinnin’ the records for sometime. He picked up his first turntables when he was 13 years old, and soon after started playing house parties, birthdays and weddings. His first branded party was called “Mothership Connection” which gave him the foundation to have a part in creating the world famous “Cream of Beat” Parties. This was the party of all parties. It was mandatory for all artists who came through the Bay Area to attend “Cream of Beat”. Anybody who’s anybody broke ground at the “Creamery”, 2Pac, Redman, Wu-Tang are just some of the alumni. Mind Motion is part founder and a member of the crew called the “Pirate DJs” and currently is the resident DJ for Chuy Gomez in the Morning on 106.1 KMEL from 5:30am – 10am. About Mr. E

One of the most respected DJs to grace the Bay Area, Miguel Escobedo has been manning the decks for over two decades, starting in 1987. In 1997, he landed a gig the Beatlounge (at Club Deco), home to the San Francisco underground turntablism scene home to world renowned DJs Apollo and Shortkut. He started promoting and produced the event, “Da Joint”, where brought a lot of world famous and local DJs to San Francisco. Mr. E has DJed in almost every club in the city and graced Rock the Bells for four years in a row. In addition, he has worked with most of the top promoters and renowned artists, such as True Skool, Massive Selector, Distortion 2 Static, Triple Threat DJs, the Beat Junkies, the Executioners, the Rub, Local 1200, Jah Warrior Hi Fi Shelter, Mos Def, KRS 1, ?uestlove, Grand Master Flash, De la Soul, Big Daddy Kane, Sister Nancy, Collie Buddz, 5th Platoon, Talib Kweli, etc . In 1999, he opened the restaurant, “Papalote” with his brother, which has garnered much attention recently as they won the culinary battle against the Food Network’s Bobby Flay.

About Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist

As a bay area resident (by way of New York), Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist made his mark by curating top notch events featuring hip hop legends and supporting independent artists from the Bay and beyond. In 2000, his True Skool events won the “Best of the Bay” in the SF Bay Guardian. Ren has appeared on numerous publications, such as the XLR8R, 7×7, SF Weekly, SF Examiner, Mugshot and SF Magazine, to name a few. since True Skool’s inception in 1999, his online magazine and newsletter has served as an information resource that covers hip hop history, politics, and events.
