JEL of ANTICON RECORDS: Jel was one of the first, if not the very first musician to use the a drum machine in live performance like a drum kit with little to no sequencing. Using the pads on the drum machine, Jel plays each snare, bass kick, cymbal and loop with his fingers. And his raps ain’t half bad either. His crunchy punched-out beats and swells of low-bit atmospherics have become anticon trademarks, highly sought after by artists around the globe. To date, Jel’s list of collaborators includes Can’s Malcolm Mooney, Stephanie Bohm from Ms. John Soda, Mike Patton, Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers, Black Thought of the Roots, DJ Krush, Mr. Dibbs, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, and just about the entire anticon roster, naturally. Jel is currently a member of Themselves (with Doseone and Dax Pierson), Subtle (a cello-drumssamplers-guitar-keyboards-winds-and-words sextet on Lex artists), and 13 & God (Themselves and the Notwist). With the recent successes of DJ pioneers such as A-Trak and DJ Craze, the art of turntablism and those who have paved the way in this lane of hip hop have once again found themselves in the spotlight. Propr, the new in-house promotion company for F8 in San Francisco, is paying homage to a true legend by welcoming J.Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies on Saturday June 7th.
J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-’80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mixtapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J.Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5 6: A Tribute to J Dilla.
This evening will be a night of good quality music with a line up of supporting DJ’s compiled of some of the Bay Area’s best in Hip Hop, Bass and Beats. Don’t miss out and be sure to get your early bird tickets for as little as $7.50 via Eventbrite.
