Al Lover is a producer from the San Francisco-based hip-hop outfit The Fist Fam. Over the last few years he has gained much notoriety for his melding of garage and psychedelic rock into spacey boom bap style hip-hop instrumentals. His story began when he remixed the Woodsist catalog, and Al’s last two projects–“Distorted Reverberations”, an exploration in sampling the current works of such rock acts as Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and “Safe as Milk Replica“, a reworking of Captain Beefheart’s first record–were highly praised and talked about by many including Rolling Stone and The LA Times’ blog. Combining crunchy drums, shaky percussion, chopped samples from genres unexplored by most hip-hop producers, and the use of multiple effect pedals, Al Lover has created a sound unlike anything else. The antithesis to the highly compressed and squeaky clean trend, Al Lover offers a more earthy, ugly and loose approach, that sounds more like you’re listening to a drunken garage rock band play live than a beat made on an MPC 2000xl.
