First Friday Tonight at Oakland featuring Youth Radio & 1-O.A.K. and live screen printing by Endless Canvas

What’s going on in Oakland? This First Friday, Youth Radio has the answer. Earlier this year, the Kennedy Center asked them to remix Marvin Gaye’s landmark album for a modern audience. On November 2nd, you can hear it for yourself — along with a special set by 1-O.A.K.

What’s Going On is credited as on of the greatest soul albums of all time. Before its release, Marvin Gaye had risen to fame with more traditional love songs like “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” But Gaye’s brother was serving in the Vietnam War, and as they exchanged letters, Gaye musician started to wonder what America would look like to a returning solder — and that’s how his greatest album was born.

As part of What’s Going On‘s 40th anniversary, the Kennedy Center asked artists to remix the album using the original multi-track recordings. After all, the themes it covers — urban poverty, social justice, the effects of a controversial war — are just as relevant as ever, especially in cities like Oakland.

Brandon McFarland, a musician and producer who performs as 1-O.A.K., worked with young musicians at Youth Radio to produce a remix for the modern age. He’ll be presenting the entire remix live at Oaklandish on First Friday. You can read more about the story behind the mix here.

Youth Radio is a program that helps young people learn how to express themselves through media, from storytelling to journalism and music production. The skills and support they receive help further their education and find jobs are graduation. Over the years, Youth Radio has won Peabody, Edward R. Murrow and Gracie Awards.

As always, our stalwart friends at FiveTen Burger will be serving curbside burgers, and there will be free Oakland-brewed beer and wine from our friends at Linden Street Brewery and Urban Legend Cellars. The festivities will run from 7 until 11, with help from our resident DJ, Dion Decibels. It might be the Day of the Dead, but downtown Oakland lives.

Jazz Mafia 12 Year Anniversary at the Fillmore Nov. 17th w/ special guest DJ QBERT

Jazz Mafia 12 Year Anniversary at the Fillmore Saturday November 17th

Performances By The Jazz Mafia Symphony, Special Guest appearance by DJ QBERT performing with the Jazz Mafia Symphony, Realistic Orchestra, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet, Adam Theis & SUBHARMONIC, Aima The Dreamer, Dublin, Soulati, Joe Bagale, and more

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- The Jazz Mafia will be celebrating their 12 Year Anniversary on November 17th, 2012 in their hometown of San Francisco at the historic Fillmore Auditorium, just across town from the Mission District, where the collective formed in 2000 by bandleader Adam Theis.  The show features special performances by each of the Jazz Mafia artists and groups including The Jazz Mafia Symphony, Realistic Orchestra, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet, Adam Theis & SUBHARMONIC, Aima The Dreamer, Dublin, Soulati, Joe Bagale, and more.  Very special guest DJ QBERT will be performing a solo set before joining the 35 piece Jazz Mafia Symphony for the grand finale.

“I’m so proud,” says Theis as he looks back on the past 12 years of the Jazz Mafia. “I feel like we’ve helped a lot to break down musical barriers by encouraging collaboration across the genres of Jazz/Classical/World and Hip-Hop.  There has never been a Jazz Mafia group that played derivative music, it would be too easy that way.  We’ve always challenged ourselves, kept it eclectic, fresh, forward thinking with respect to the past and definitely gangster.”

Theis states that there are more special guests to be added to the anniversary line up. “We’re going to be bringing in many of the collaborators whom we’ve worked with through the years as special guests,” says Theis.  “Were still confirming many of them but as always expect some of the best talent in the world.  “We’ll also be featuring many visual/dance artists whom I’ve been connecting and collaborating with through my Treat Social Club Series that was started this year.” That’s all I can say for now!”

The Jazz Mafia has been very busy the past few years with their debut of the highly acclaimed symphony Brass, Bows, & Beats in 2010, and symphony #2, The Emperor Norton Suite, in 2011.  That same year, the Jazz Mafia Symphony took The Emperor Norton Suite on the road for the first time including a performance in front of 10,000 people at Summer Stage in Central Park with Roy Ayers, and a hometown show at the Stern Grove festival. The Jazz Mafia Symphony are currently gearing up to release their first studio album with The Emperor Norton Suite, the follow up to 2010’s live Brass Bows & Beats album.

In 2010 the Jazz Mafia celebrated their 10 year anniversary, and completed their break-through summer tour where they performed “Brass, Bows & Beats” in front of tens of thousands at major festivals nationwide including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. The group’s bold and interactive creativity and stage presence captivated audiences across the continent. Now, in 2012, they are captivating audiences across the country with “The Emperor Norton Suite”.

This year also saw the the emergence of Adam Theis’ new project, Subharmonic.  The 5 multi-instrumentlists of Adam Theis & Subharmonic create the sound of everything from a futuristic Mega-Orchestra to 1920s Cotton Club Dubstep by sampling, looping, layering and manipulating an array of brass instruments.

Pre-sale tickets for The Jazz Mafia’s 12 Year Anniversary are available now until Friday 10/12/12 at 10pm with a discounted service fee at http://jazzmafia.inticketing.com/events/257538.  The general on sale for the public will be Sunday 10/14/12 at 10 am at http://www.livenation.com.
