Oakland’s Art & Soul Festival

Saturday August 4, 2012

Souls of Mischief & more

The festival that launched downtown Oakland’s transformation as the Bay Area’s hottest dining and arts scene, Art & Soul Oakland will sizzle this year with two art- and music-packed days featuring live jazz, rock, gospel, E.D.M., punk, honky-tonk, metal, world, Latin, folk, R&B, and blues music performed by national recording artists and top local talent.

This year’s event also features late-night hours on Saturday; epic scales of art installations, film projections, and light-based art from local artists including de Young Museum artist fellows and artist-in-residence alumni, American Steel, and others; hundreds of artisan booths; gourmet global cuisine and mobile food trucks; and for kids, carnival rides, music, art activities and costumed characters.

Easy to get to and fun for all, the 12th annual Art & Soul Oakland offers direct access via public transit in addition to free parking for cars and bikes. Brought to you by the City of Oakland and the East Bay Express.

On June 9, Georgia Anne Muldrow will be touching the stage of the New Parish along with her label mate and beau, Dudley Perkins. Muldrow will be performing a selection of her most notable songs that include “Run Away,” “Roses” and “Seeds” as well as some newer work, both solo and collaborations with Perkins. The self-proclaimed “instrument of the ancestors’” style is best described as electro-funk-jazz-fusion Hip Hop, familiar yet incomparable.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Muldrow has done notable work with J* DaVey, Spinz and Sa-Ra and is known for playing most instruments featured on her tracks. Her skills as a composer have been praised on NPR, the Toronto Star and popular websites like turntablelab.com. Conscious hip-hop icon, Mos Def says, “She’s incredible. She’s like Flack, Nina Simone, Ella, she’s something else. She’s like religion. It’s heavy, vibrational music. I’ve never heard a human being sing like this. Her voice is wildly, finely expressive. It’s so singular. It’s hip-hop, the way that she approaches it rhythmically, she’s got so many jazz influences. It’s something else and you can just feel it.”

Dudley Perkins aka Declaime is one of premier beatsmith, Madlib’s favorite collaborators. When Madlib drops the funk, Declaime is a preferred lyricist for the final product. As an MC, Perkins has released deep, intuitive and content laden rhymes. With a vocal tone that occasionally reminds one of a more subdued ODB, Perkins is instinctively conscious yet fun spirited when he rocks the mic.
