Gerald Casterlow was, and always will be, an inspirational person on and off the dance floor.

On the dance floor he inspired people on a global scale with his innovative moves and combinations which lead to winning countless crew and solo competitions across the planet. Gerald’s first competition with Rock Force Crew in San Francisco brought them to the final battle; Rock Force Crew vs Style Elements – a battle which echoed like a cannon blast heard around the world. People outside of California quickly caught wind of this battle and began to take interest. Gerald was one of the first b-boys in California to master the air-flare and quickly added it to his already vast arsenal of moves which aided in two of his most memorable accomplishments in the dance world: 1st place at Battle of the Year in Germany with Rock Force Crew, and 1st place in the 1 on 1 competition at Rock Steady anniversary in New York.

On December 23rd 1998, shortly after winning Rock Steady anniversary, Gerald was in a car waiting for a friend when he received a near fatal injury by a stray bullet to the head, a victim to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The gunshot nearly took his life but wouldn’t hold this warrior down. He came back and regained majority of his moves and continued to tour and dance with Climax Soul Control while teaching classes at the SCMX Dance Academy in Fresno, Ca.

Outside of his personal career Gerald was a selfless and giving person who loved to share his craft with the community and was never selfish with his knowledge of the art form. A true gift of Gerald was how he could translate his grasp on the concepts behind movement in a manner others could easily comprehend. While teaching others new moves he could analyze them and easily pinpoint what was missing and what could compliment the movement. He would spend hours on end helping others learn new moves while always maintaining a patient and positive energy while teaching.

On December 23rd 2012, 14 years to the day after suffering from the gunshot to the head Gerald suffered a seizure and suffered brain trauma. After two hospitals confirmed the lack of brain activity and Gerald was removed from life support on the afternoon of December 30th and stopped breathing that evening.

Gerald we will miss you dearly and thank you for the Legacy you left the community.

Words by Sean Burgess.

It’s On! The Red Bull BC One 2012 World Championship Battles in Rio

This December 8th, all eyes will be on Rio de Janeiro. This coastal Brazilian city, a major influence on B-Boying with its capoeira and ginga style, will serve as home of the Red Bull BC One, the most important 1-on-1 B-Boy competition in the world. When it comes to the most innovative dancing today, you’ll find it on this stage. To make it to the finals is an honor reserved for only the greatest B-Boys in the world. Each year the competition gets tougher and tougher, resulting in the most physically challenging power moves, jaw-dropping freezes, and creative and diverse combinations.

2012 marked the biggest year yet for the Red Bull BC One. Over a thousand B-Boys the world over competed in more than 60 country cyphers. Six qualifier events narrowed down top contenders in North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Asia Pacific, and a first-ever competition held in Middle East Africa. The winners earned a chance to compete against the reigning champion, Roxrite (USA) and a panel-chosen group of nine of the world’s top dancers.

The 16 dance contenders have been training intensely all year for their moment in Rio. It’s an extremely high-pressure competition, with one dancer being eliminated in each battle round. Judges score the B-Boys on their battle strategy, power moves, dance foundation, fresh routine, and overall style. This year a panel of judges including Red Bull BC One All Star Neguin (Brazil), Red Bull BC One All Star Taisuke (Japan), Moy (USA), Niek (Holland), and Storm (Germany), will determine the winner of the ultimate B-Boy prize.

This year’s six qualifier winners are DOMKey (USA), Klesio (Brazil), Lil Zoo (Morocco), Mounir (France), Shorty Force (South Korea) and Slav (Bulgaria). If Roxrite takes the title this year, he’ll be the only B-Boy in history to win the championship two years in a row. But he’s up against, among others, this year’s youngest dancer, 15-year-old wunderkind Issei from Japan, who recently won this year’s R16 in Korea. The final this year is anyone’s game, with a highly competitive roster rounded out by Arex (Colombia), Sunni (UK), Vicious Victor (USA), Kid David (USA), Junior (France), ExacT (Russia), Differ (South Korea), and Hill (Mexico).

Hip Hop DJ Skeme Richards will lay down the battle music and Brazilian rapper Dughettu will MC the night. B-Boy legends Kwikstep and CROS1 will provide one-of-a-kind commentary for hundreds of thousands of fans watching the event livestream, which in addition to being hosted on redbullbcone.com can also be embedded onto partner sites. Select live TV Broadcasts will air the program to fans around the world. Check local listings for details.

The 2012 World Final leads up to next year’s 10th anniversary of the Red Bull BC One. Expect lots of surprises to come and celebrations of all that is B-Boy culture. We’ll see you in Rio, and may the best man win!
