Viva La Hip Hop

In 2009, SHIFT was conceived inside a small, forward-thinking venue called The Crosby as a sonic collaboration between the World Famous Beat Junkies’ DJ Rhettmatic, experimental producer Free the Robots and Los Angeles dance party staple PLANN.B. In an experiment to bring their wide-ranging musical tastes together under one roof, a new sound was born that bridged hip hop, experimental beats, electronic, soul, and house music. Never known to be constrained by any particular sound, you’d be likely to find the residents flipping between old 45s and same-day internet finds within their sets, resulting in a wild mish-mash of genres, bending and defying any sort of format but somehow always retaining a very special vibe. What resulted was a 6-year run that saw the residents cutting loose for capacity crowds alongside guests like Prince Paul, Dam Funk, J. Rocc, Maseo, DJ Numark, Teeko, B-Real, DJ Day, Houseshoes, B. Bravo & Soulection just to name a few.

Beginning in July, the party will embark on a 6-year anniversary run with events slated for Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Francisco, with more shows to be added throughout the fall.
